Marketing Intern

Under the direction of the CEO, the Marketing Intern works with the Children's Discovery Museum’s professional staff team and provides marketing and promotional support to all areas of the museum. Responsibilities involve exposure to sensitive information and requires a keen sense of confidentiality and considerable use of tact, diplomacy, discretion, and judgment. The Marketing Intern provides the utmost in exemplary customer service to CDMOD visitors, staff, donors and volunteers. This position will assist in the implementation of the Museum strategic plans and initiatives, Museum policies and procedures, and Museum goals & objectives.

This position requires a team player - working closely with the Executive Director, Executive Assistant and all other professional staff and departments.  This internship is an unpaid position.

Development Internship

Assist the Development department with projects aimed at maintaining the Museum's relationship with current donors.

Goals:

  • Plan and coordinate strategic efforts with Development department
  • Study and submit report on current development strategies used, findings, conclusions and recommendations
  • Undertake various projects as needed


Requirements:

  • 2-3  month commitment.
  • A minimum of 15 hours a week.
  • Bachelors degree or college enrolled in any of the related fields of study: sociology, psychology, early childhood education, marketing and medicine.
  • Computer knowledge  


Merchandising and Retail Internship


Students will  learn about the retail experience and toys as an extension of the education experience. Learn what  the correlation between: our Museum exhibits and current merchandise we offer at our unique store. Start with retail software, inventory and interact with our wonderful patrons. Gain the knowledge of the magical world of educational toys and the fun of discovery and inspire.

Goals:

Assist Operations Manager and Assistant Buyer in maintaining, improve and grow our retail sales through positive attitude, applied learning and team work.List of daily routine listed below:

  • All Interns need to be able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs- merchandise/retail staff are responsible for set-up and take down of store displays
  • Provide analysis of item movement and inventory use
  • Develop creative floor plans and merchandise displays under the direction of the Retail Store Manager
  • Aid in the support of the e-store/web site marketing component of the Museum


Requirements:

  • 2-3 month commitment.
  • Produce written report with findings, conclusions and recommendations to Museum A minimum of 15 hours a week.
  • Bachelors degree or college enrolled in any of the related fields of study: merchandising and marketing .
  • Computer knowledge
  • Demonstrate the ability to interface with other departments as needed
  • Cross train in various Museum operations.




Public Relations Internship

Strengthen your ability to identify community characteristics and needs, to define potential community roles and relationships to build and sustain reciprocal, mutually beneficial relationships and to explore and balance diverse perspective.

Goals:

  • Assist Development Department in different projects with the community
  • Study and suggest recommendations in current programs to the Museum
  • Interface with both departments as needed


Milestones to achieve during your internship:

  • Aid in the development of outreach materials for public speaking engagements
  • Help create a public speaking calendar for the CDMOD staff members
  • Participate in business expositions or trade booth opportunities
  • All Interns need to be able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs- PR staff are responsible for set-up and take down of equipment/supplies for trainings, expo’s and trade shows
  • Aid in research of other like institutions with an emphasis on the Southern California market and website trafficking

  • Bachelors degree or college enrolled in any of the related fields of study: merchandising and marketing .

Special Events Internship

One of the most critical aspects of managing a museum is to strategically create opportunities of growth. Students will consider the local, regional, national and international context when preparing for this internship, which will raise awareness of the Museum and strengthen the organizational outcome.

Goals:

  • Learn strategic event planning and assist the current Event Planner Coordinator
  • Assist in research of vendors and locations
  • Draft marketing plans and potential earnings graphs, all support material needed for different events and projects


Requirements:

  • 2-3 month commitment.
  • Produce written report with findings, conclusions and recommendations to Museum A minimum of 15 hours a week.
  • Bachelors degree or college enrolled in any of the related fields of study: Public relations, journalism, mass communication or marketing (other business concentrations will be considered)
  • Computer knowledge
  • Demonstrate the ability to interface with other departments as needed
  • Cross train in various Museum operations.
