2017 Winter Discovery Camp 

When school is out, Museum Discovery Camp is in! Join us for Winter Discovery Camp where kids come together and explore a theme through art, activities, and play.

Week #1 – December 18, 19, 20, 21, 22

ADVENTURERS (Enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year)

9:00 A.M.-12 NOON – The Science of Stories
Explore basic science concepts through hands-on activities inspired by favorite stories and the fairy tales featured in our current traveling exhibit, Once Upon a Time!

EXPLORERS (Enrolled in 1st or 2nd grade for the 2017-2018 school year)
9:00 A.M.-12 NOON – Maker Camp in the MakerSpace
In this all new camp experience, you’ll spend all morning in the Museum’s MakerSpace exploring what it means to be a “maker”. Get hands-on with real tools, learn how to build safely, and create a one of a kind project you’ll take home at the end of the week!

1:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M. – Awesome Animal Artworks

We share the world with a huge variety of amazing animals, from the tiniest insect to the giant blue whale. Explore both animals and art as you paint, draw, and construct some of your favorite animals with professional artist John Coleman!

DISCOVERERS (Enrolled in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade for the 2017-2018 school year)

Some of the most memorable and moving artworks feature not people, but animals. In this camp, participants will enjoy a week of fun, hands-on arts experiences with professional artist John Coleman using the animal kingdom for inspiration.

Week #2 – December 26, 27, 28, 29

9:00 A.M.-12 NOON – Honey, I Shrunk the Camper!
Find out what it’s like to be small, really small! Using Thumbelina and other favorite fairy tales for inspiration, campers will create, explore, and discover all things tiny with the museum’s early childhood specialist Ruth English.

You’ve probably heard about the importance of STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), but where things get most exciting is when those subjects intersect with the arts, resulting in an explosion of creative possibilities. Explore STEAM concepts and activities with local professional artist John Coleman in this exciting camp!

Campers will use art to explore the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The next generation of innovators need to be able to create and work across disciplines, and this fun, hands-on camp, conducted by local professional artist John Coleman, is full of opportunities to learn.

Week #3 – January 2, 3, 4, 5

ADVENTURERS (Enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year)
9:00 A.M.-12 NOON – Kindergarten Craftsman
Who says tools and building are just for the “big” kids? In this all new camp experience being offered for the first time, the museum’s early childhood specialist Ruth English and our kindergarten campers will take over the museum MakerSpace to learn through hands-on projects designed specifically for this age group.

Without new inventions, how would we make our way into the future? Each day, campers will have the opportunity to create their own invention through hands-on projects with local professional artist John Coleman.

Join local artist Maria Hunt in exploring a variety of hands-on art activities inspired by the season. Campers will learn new techniques and create beautiful artworks to bring home throughout the week.

Celebrate winter through a variety of fun-filled activities where you’ll learn about the season through hands-on experience. Campers will enjoy learning about winter in the desert and around the world through experiments, art-making, and more!

1:00 P.M.- 4:00 P.M. – Conceive, Construct, Create!
Great new things don’t just appear, they start with an idea and are tested and improved upon. Throughout the week campers will join instructor, local artist John Coleman, in coming up with new ideas to create their very own inventions through a variety of artistic methods.
